Closing the Gap National Partnership Agreement on Indigenous Early Childhood Development

Closing the Gap National Partnership Agreement on Indigenous Early Childhood Development: A Step Towards Building Stronger Communities

The Closing the Gap National Partnership Agreement on Indigenous Early Childhood Development is an initiative aimed at improving the lives of Indigenous children and their families. The agreement, launched in 2009, is a partnership between the Australian Government and state and territory governments, and is designed to reduce the gap in outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in Australia.

This agreement is an important step towards building stronger and more resilient communities, and recognises the critical role that early childhood development plays in shaping the lives of children and their families. The agreement aims to improve access to early childhood education and care services, as well as to support parents and families in providing the best possible start in life for their children.

Through the agreement, governments are committed to working with Indigenous communities to co-design and deliver early childhood services that are responsive to local needs and cultural practices. This includes supporting language and cultural programs, as well as promoting the use of Indigenous languages in early childhood settings.

The agreement also recognises the importance of supporting families in their parenting roles, by providing access to information and resources on child development, health, and wellbeing. This includes supporting the development of parenting programs and home visiting services, as well as promoting the role of Indigenous families in decision-making and service delivery.

In addition to these initiatives, the agreement also aims to improve the data and evidence base on Indigenous early childhood development, to ensure that policies and programs are evidence-based and effective. This includes efforts to improve data collection and analysis on Indigenous children’s development, as well as to strengthen research on effective early childhood programs.

The Closing the Gap National Partnership Agreement on Indigenous Early Childhood Development represents an important step towards building stronger and more resilient communities, and towards closing the gap in outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in Australia. By working in partnership with Indigenous communities to deliver early childhood services that are responsive to local needs and cultural practices, as well as by supporting families in their parenting roles and promoting the use of evidence-based policies and programs, we can create a brighter future for all children and their families.
